I'll ask an owner three questions about their own business, and watch them reach for a login.
Not because they're bad at this. Because the numbers live in a bank app, a spreadsheet, and their head — and never in one place at the same time.
Here are the three I'd want every pest, lawn, HVAC, and contracting owner to know without looking:
1. Cash on hand, and how many weeks it buys.
Not your revenue. Your runway. Revenue is a vanity number if you can't make payroll in March. Cash position is the one that tells you whether you can breathe.
2. Gross margin by job type.
Which work actually makes money. Most owners are surprised — the busy, low-margin job they say yes to every time is quietly subsidizing the one they should be selling harder.
3. What's recurring out the door.
The subscriptions, the auto-renewals, the vendor charges that crept up. The stuff you signed up for once and never looked at again. It adds up faster than anyone expects.
You don't need a finance degree to run these. You need them in front of you, in plain English, before the month is over instead of three weeks after.
That's the whole reason I build the dashboards I do — so the answer to those three questions is one glance, not a scavenger hunt.
Could you answer all three right now, without logging into anything?
